Hackney Hosts Volunteer Week Celebration

Volunteers’ Week 1-7^th June is an annual event which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK.

To highlight the contribution, there is a burst of celebrations where organisations hold events and activities to highlight their volunteers and the volunteering that they do.

Hackney Council and Peabody Trust held a celebratory event at Gillet Square in Dalston for the Hackney Host Volunteer team. The celebratory event also enabled the recruitment of more volunteers to reach the target of one hundred volunteers for the hackney host team.

Volunteers also had a chance to meet with some local organisations that had voluntary opportunities to get involved in and sign up for.

As the volunteers began to fill the square, the existing hackney host volunteers met and welcomed new volunteers to the team and enjoyed an array of activities such as Cadbury’s stripes versus spots games, and herd planting. Some queued up for a free massage from one of Activate London masseuses.

Volunteers enjoyed a barbecue lunch provided by the Vortex cafe, and were entertained musically by the vortex bar which fashioned a lively atmosphere for the day which resulted in a dance off and much laughter.

There was a raffle draw where three lucky volunteers went home with prizes and big smiles.

By the end of the day the volunteers were all gathered together for a photo shoot and a big thank you speech from Yolanda Sissing, Peabody’s volunteer co-ordinator which signalled the end to an amazing day.
